The number of people living with hypertension globally has doubled since 1990, affecting 1.3 billion individuals as of 2019. The increase is driven in part by the rise in numbers of older adults worldwide, according to the first annual World Health Organization (WHO) report on hypertension.

Many people with high blood pressure—about 78%—live in low- and middle-income countries, the report noted.

In addition to using medications that lower blood pressure, hypertension can be managed by actions such as eating a healthy diet, quitting tobacco, and increasing physical activity.

However, only about one-fifth of people live with controlled hypertension. The report estimates that should countries invest in hypertension management strategies, the world could prevent 76 million deaths by 2050. To avoid these additional deaths, WHO recommended that countries produce easy-to-follow treatment protocols, maintain uninterrupted stores of blood pressure medications, and reduce barriers to care by providing free treatment and nearby health care visits.
